College Virtual Connections: Connecting with University of Miami, Florida Southern, Embry Riddle

Here are some great highlights that I think parents and students should know:

Private colleges can be affordable. There are many different scholarship opportunities, many that are stack-able to reduce the costs of higher tuition rates from private institutions. All three colleges talked about the many opportunities that are available, including using Bright Futures, the Access to Better Learning & Education Grant, and special institutional scholarships. The key take away- “Let us show you before making ruling us out!”

- If you were all watching- Embry-Riddle did confirm the Women’s Scholarship is still a go!!

- For more information visit College UnMazed’s workbook pages p.29 & p. 72-78

Financial Aid- I was excited to learn that University of Miami was going 100% need-based support. This joins many other highly selective schools that have done the same. I discuss more of these programs and how to find them on p.73 in the College UnMazed workbook!

Admissions- All three universities stressed their unique admissions process that focuses on a holistic review of the student. This includes reviewing the application, essay, and letters of recommendation as a whole package, not just one specific criteria, like GPA or test scores. In fact, both UM and FSC are test optional schools!! Don’t forget what Liz Whitby from UM said- don’t send scores if you are going “test optional”- if you do, they will use them!

Your Factor & Scholarships- What I also think is important to note, is that all stated they determined the importance of having these materials showcase YOU- something that I talk heavily about in Chapter 1 and Chapter 3- as not only do they review your materials for admissions but also scholarships at the point of application (see p.62 & 63 in College UnMazed on the exact process of deciding college admissions) !!

Q& A- I thought the Q & A had such great questions, about letters of recommendations (who are they looking for?), how their scholarships work, and dual enrollment, AICE, IB, and CLEP credit (does it transfer?!?). Definitely something to watch!!

Be sure to tune into the next College Virtual Connection, Tuesday, September 8th, 7:00-8:00 pm!

We have two very important experts on college admissions testing coming on!!

Jess Duesler is the Florida Executive Director of K-12 for ACT who will be discussing all the new updates, timeline of testing, study materials, and many other things that parents, students, and counselors need to know to be ready or taking college entrance exams.

Emily Levitt is the VP of Education for Sylvan Learning who will be discussing what families need to do to plan on getting the test scores student need for admissions and scholarships, and how to navigate the process together for success!

This live webinar will such great information.. I highly suggest you be sure you register and tune in live to make sure your questions get answered!
